  1. Hi Tony. A couple comments. 1). Jesus uses two words for “eat”: ἔφαγον and ὁ τρώγων. The original generation of Israelites partook of salvation outwardly and went through the mechanics, however their issue was that they did not mix it with faith. Compare Hebrews 4:2 μὴ συγκεκερασμένους τῇ πίστει τοῖς ἀκούσασιν.= they had not mingled with with the hearing of faith. Jesus contrasts that generation with those who truly partake and digest the Gospel. See Hebrews 6:9 Πεπείσμεθα δὲ περὶ ὑμῶν, ἀγαπητοί, τὰ κρείσσονα καὶ ἐχόμενα σωτηρίας = “We however have been persuaded about you, brothers, of better things having to do with salvation”

2). We are ever reminded that human response to salvation occurs only in the presence of the Father’s drawing, effectual grace (6:65 οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐλθεῖν πρός με ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ δεδομένον αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ πατρός) operating in confluence with the human will and that human rejection lies squarely in the hands of the human will alone (6:66 Ἐκ τούτου πολλοὶ [ἐκ] τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ οὐκέτι μετʼ αὐτοῦ περιεπάτουν).
