  1. Hi Tony. Jesus states in John 7:38 – ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ, καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή, ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος. Many have wondered which scripture Jesus may be referring to here in the phrase: καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή, ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος. We know from the timing of the year that the festal celebration would had been that of the Feast of Tabernacles (roughly six months prior to Passover). Alfred Eidersheim in his volume: “Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah” explains in detail the ritual the Jews had developed by this time. Essentially, the priests would take a golden pitcher and draw water from the Pool of Siloam and take it in procession to a special fountain with tubes and pour the water in the pitcher into the said vessel with the hope of spiritual cleansing and eschatological empowerment of the coming Spirit in anticipation of the Messianic Age. In typology, the Feast of Tabernacles commemorated the coming Kingdom of God. I would be curious to see what particular Synagogue readings went with the Feast of Tabernacles (Shavout). At anyrate, the NA28 lists the following O.T scriptures as potential candidates: Lev 23:36; Isaiah 12:3; 43:19; 49:10; 55:1; Ezekiel 47:1-12; Joel 4:18; Zech 14:8. A few of these selections from the LXX are listed below. It is a worthwhile study. Perhaps Jesus is combining several scriptures with similar themes. Compare some of the following:

John 7:38 has the verb ῥεύσουσιν which coorresponds with the verb ῥυήσονται in the LXX.

John 7:38 has the phrase ὕδατος ζῶντος.
