  1. Hi Tony. I thought it was interesting in the Pharisee’s sarcasm that they unwittingly spoke on the ultimate aim of Jesus’ mission. Notice what they say in John 7:35 εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς · ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν ; μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας ; The Jewish leaders viewed the wider Mediterranean world and the Greek Diaspora, with Gentiles, as forbidden territory. The fact that they used the negative μὴ would indicate that the option of Jesus going into the diaspora was a “non-option”, i.e: “surely that is not what Jesus is meaning, is he?”. Unknown to them and unimaginable to the disciples at this point, Jesus’ mission would reach into those lands by way of the post-Pentecost church in Acts. Even though Jesus’ main point in John 7:34 “ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με]” pertains to His ascension (cf John 14:1-2; Acts 1:11), the Pharisees’ statement sheds light on how much the Old Covenant, tradition laced Judaism of the first century was inadequate to achieve the mission that God had sent Jesus for: to communicate the light of the Gospel. Jesus’ ascension into heaven would result in the sending of the Spirit and hence – the church would be the vessel to carry forth the Gospel.

  2. Hi Mahlon, thank you for these wonderful insights and my apologies for not replying earlier. Essays and exams were beckoning. I really appreciate this insight and it reminds me of the new wine into new wineskins passage of Jesus’. A question for you. Jesus was born under the Law to redeem those under the Law as Paul says in Galatians 4:4. If this is the case when could we say that Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant? Was it during his earthly ministry or at the point of his shed blood?
