I have been thinking recently about how I have learnt different things over the course of my life, from learning to ride a bike to Martial Arts (as a young guy) to learning drums and now to learning Greek, and I have boiled it down to the following simple formula:

Routine + Repetition = Retention.

Many of us know that it is far better to do a ‘little bit’ each day as opposed to large chunks in one sitting and then an interval between the ‘binge learning’.  This is the routine part of the equation.

Coupled to routine is repetition. There is no escaping the fact that for many of us we need to touch information, or a particular skill, time and time again until it becomes second nature. Learning how to first ride a bike is a classic example and if you can remember when you first learnt to ride your bike, I’m sure you wondered, will I ever get this? Sure enough with enough Routine and enough Repetition, the result is Retention whereby we often use the well known saying: “It’s just like riding a bike. Once you have learnt, you will never forget”.

The aim of these Keep Your Greek posts is summed up in this formula: Routine (going over the weekly post on a daily basis and not breaking the chain), + Repetition (going over the same material each day of the week of the post) = Retention (hopefully if the previous two steps are followed, then retention should be the result).
